Different Types of Cancer

Cancer comes in several different forms and can develop in different parts of the body. Once developed, the cancer can go through different stages of maturity. When diagnosed early on, various types of cancer can be treated. Cancer often begins with a tumor, which is a group of cells or a single cell that grow uncontrollably. The growth can destroy surrounding tissues and invade the function of various body parts.

Benign tumors, on the other hand, do not invade or spread the cells to other parts of the body through the blood or via lymph. This process of spreading is called metastasis. Some cancers, such as skin cancer and leukemia, do not develop from tumors.

The most common type of cancer is lung cancer, with several thousand cases reported every year. The least common type of cancer is leukemia. Cancer can develop at any age, but the risk increases with age.
