Cancer: Basic Information about Cancer

Cancer is the result of abnormal cells that grow out of control in the body. It encompasses more than 100 diseases in different parts of the body and needs quick attention. If left untreated, cancer can cause severe illness and death. In normal conditions, cells grow, divide, and die all the time. During youth, cells divide and die at a more rapid rate. With age, cell division slows down, and cells divide only when it is necessary to replace damaged or dying cells. Cancer cells are formed when the DNA is damaged and cannot be repaired. DNA is present in every cell and manages the activities of cells. The disease can be inherited through inheriting a damaged DNA; however, a cell’s DNA can be damaged by external factors like sun exposure, tobacco, viruses, and more. Since cancer cells are abnormal, they keep on surviving and spreading if not treated. Each type of cancer differs from the other. It grows at different rates and requires different types of treatment. Breast cancer and brain cancer, for instance, are very different from one another. While a cancer is usually in the form of a tumor, there are some cancer types, like leukemia, that circulate through the blood. As the abnormal cells circulate, they affect tissues and organs. They spread through the lymph system. The process of spreading is called metastasis. While the disease is quite widespread, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds, individuals can reduce cancer risk by leading healthy lives, according to cancer research.
